BEING A GOSPEL PRESENCE DOWNTOWN

We believe that God has intentionally planted us in Downtown Campbell River

We believe the gospel (the good news of Jesus Christ) has a transformative effect on every aspect of life.  We have a collective purpose to express and live out that good news in both word and deed.  We proclaim this gospel through activities of forgiveness and reconciliation, compassion, peacemaking, hope and grace giving.

PRAY

  • Pray for wisdom in aligning with what God is doing and wanting to do in downtown Campbell River.
  • Pray for our downtown neighbours (homeless, businesses, Campbellton, Numbered Streets)
  • Pray for ‘people of peace’ in the downtown community.

LEARN

  • Learn the demographics of the downtown community through research including but not limited to census data.
  • Learn the needs of the downtown community and how Discovery can be a light in the downtown.

INTEGRATE & INNOVATE

  • Intentionally target the downtown community with church advertisement using direct mailing and social media.
  • Focus community outreach/bridge building events in the downtown core.
  • Initiate 1 program that intentionally focus on reaching the downtown neighbours within 3 years. (by 2027)
  • Initiate 2 programs that intentionally focus on reaching the downtown neighbours within 5 years. (by 2029)

DEVELOPING LEADERS

We believe that Body of Christ needs empowered, healthy leaders to function properly in God’s Kingdom.

We strive to seek out and develop new leaders as we also equip existing leaders to increase their influence and impact for the community for God’s Kingdom.

PRAY

  • Pray about how to develop leaders from within our congregation
  • Pray for teachable hearts
  • Pray for next steps in hiring process including possible internships

LEARN

  • Learn how to raise healthy ownership levels among the congregation
  • Discern who the natural leaders are in our church
  • Discern who needs encouragement to step into a leadership position
  • Learn strategies for aligning leaders to the Mission, Vision and Values of the church to prevent ‘loose cannon leaders’.

INTEGRATE & INNOVATE

  • Delegate 50% of church needs to individuals within the church through a process of Equip, Empower and Accountability by end of 2024.
  • Delegate 75% of church ministries to individuals within the church through a process of Equip, Empower and Accountability by end of 2026.
  • Move Pastoral Job Descriptions into primarily equipping roles by 2025.

GROWING YOUNGER

We believe that children and youth are not the church of tomorrow, but are valuable parts of the church of today.

Jesus told us that the a child should be our example of faith.  We choose to create an environment where children and youth can learn and be learned from, where families can be cared for and serve alongside one another.  We believe that all people matter, from diapers to dentures.

PRAY

  • Pray about intentionally reaching non-churched young families
  • Pray about partnerships with Camp Bob
  • Pray about hiring a part time Youth person
  • Pray for persons of peace in the young families demographic

LEARN

  • Learn why young families have left the church in the past
  • Teach church how voluntold does not work. Provide accountability for this.
  • Learn individual children and youth, their passions and places to serve.

INTEGRATE & INNOVATE

  • Create intentional community opportunities for families with school age children
  • Integrate children and youth in the church serving how they want to serve
  • Create multigenerational social connection opportunities
  • Encourage multigenerational mentorship relationship

EMBRACING MULTICULTURALISM

We are witnessing God drawing the nations to Campbell River.

We believe that God’s Kingdom is comprised of every tribe, tongue and nation.  When we worship with God in eternity, it will be a beautiful mosaic of people.  The Church is meant to be a taste of that reality.  We choose to embrace people of all nationalities and cultures, appreciating uniquenesses and including in the life of the church.

PRAY

  • Pray for ‘people of peace’ who can be ambassadors to different cultural groups.
  • Pray how to include and integrate different cultures into our church community.
  • Pray how to include and integrate different cultures into our worship service.

LEARN

  • Learn what parts of our service and church community need to be clarified to those where English is not a first language.
  • Learn what parts of our faith need clarity from English as other language people
  • Learn how to reach international students at NIC
  • Learn attainable needs of International students
  • Learn attainable needs of new immigrant

INTEGRATE & INNOVATE

  • Continue to provide message notes in multiple languages as able. (delegate this)
  • Begin including multi-cultures within our visible services
  • Begin one initiative focused on discipling people from non-North American cultures within 5 years. (by 2029)

MULTIPLYING GOSPEL PRESENCE

We believe God’s kingdom is meant to expand to every community and that God chooses to use the local church for this movement.

With a sense of the faith and generosity that was given in the planting of Discovery Community Church, we strive to become a church that brings gospel presence into communities that are lacking this, whether through partnerships, church planting or multi-site initiatives, small disciple making groups or other creative initiatives.

PRAY

  • Pray about a partnership with Sayward that would be mutually beneficial.
  • Pray about Quadra Island.
  • Pray about Cortez Island
  • Pray about partnerships to support in multiplication (other churches, BCMB, Multiply

LEARN

  • Research what partnerships are available for new church initiatives with the BCMB and Multiply
  • Research Census data of Sayward, Quadra and Cortez
  • Talk to other churches about partnership opportunities
  • Learn who at Discovery has a passion for new gospel works

INTEGRATE & INNOVATE

  • Discern where an additional gospel community should be.
    • Have serious conversations with Sayward in terms of supportive partnership (by end of 2024)
    • Have preliminary conversation with Quadra Bible and Homewood by end of 2024)
    • Have preliminary conversation with Christians on Cortez by end of 2024)
  • Initiate a second gospel presence, if God opens a door, by September 2025
